Privacy Policy
LifeChapters is operated by Second Innings LLC (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what we collect when you make a book, what we do with it, and how to get rid of it.
The short version
- You give us a year of photographs. We find one child in them, choose the ones worth keeping, and lay them out as a book.
- Finding your child means analysing faces. We do not do that until you have said yes to it.
- We never sell your photographs and never share them for anyone else's marketing.
- We keep your finished books until you delete them. The photographs you upload, and everything we work out from them, stay until you delete them or close your account. Face data from a photo set you never finish a book from is deleted sooner, within thirty days.
Information collection and use
Our purpose in collecting information is to provide and improve the service, complete your orders, and let you find and manage your books. As used here, “using” and “processing” information include collecting, storing, evaluating, modifying, deleting, combining, disclosing and transferring it within our organisation.
Personally identifiable information
When you create an account or place an order we collect information that can be used to contact or identify you: your name, email address, and the postal address a printed book is sent to. We also collect the first name of the child a book is about, because it is printed on the cover, and any text you write or edit in a book.
We use this information to provide the service, complete your transactions and answer your enquiries.
Photographs and face data
This is the most sensitive information we handle, so it is worth being exact about it.
- Your photographs. We collect the images you upload or import, together with the information embedded in them — the date taken, camera details, and location if it is present. We use them only to produce your book.
- Face data. To work out which photographs contain the child a book is about, we analyse faces and create numerical representations of them. Under some state laws these are biometric identifiers. We treat them as sensitive information.
- Everyone in your photographs. To find one child we have to analyse every face in the images you give us, including other people's — siblings, friends, strangers in the background. What happens to those representations afterwards depends on one thing, so here it is plainly.
- Your photographs are kept together as a reusable set, so that a second book — a different year, or a different child — does not mean scanning everything over again. That set holds face representations for everyone who appears in it, not only your child. They are deleted when you delete the photo set or your account, and within thirty days if you never finish a book from that set. If you do finish a book, they stay until you delete the set or your account.
- When you pick your child from a set of faces we found, we discard the pictures of everyone else's faces that we showed you. The reusable set keeps their representations, as described above.
In both cases we keep the position of faces within an image, which we need in order to crop pages without cutting people in half. A position is not an identity: it cannot be matched against another photograph or any other person.
- We never disclose face data. It is not sold, not shared, and not sent to our printing provider or to anyone else.
- Where it lives. Encrypted at rest, in the United States.
Consent to face analysis
- We obtain your consent in writing, on screen and in plain language, before any face analysis takes place. We record that you consented, when you did, and which version of this policy applied.
- By consenting you confirm that you are the parent or legal guardian of the child concerned, or that you have their guardian's permission, and that you are authorised to give this consent on that child's behalf.
- You may withdraw consent at any time. We will stop processing and delete the face data. Books already made stay as they are unless you delete them too.
How long we keep things
We publish the actual period, or the exact thing that triggers deletion, rather than saying “as long as necessary”.
- Finished books: kept until you delete them. Deleting a photo set or your whole account removes it and everything derived from it. Deleting a book removes the book and the records made for it; the photo set it came from stays until you delete that too.
- The photographs you upload, and the working files made from them (photo sets, scores, page plans): until you delete them or close your account. Your finished books are unaffected; they no longer need the originals.
- Face representations of the child a book is about: kept with the photo set until you delete the set or your account, or ask us to. Within thirty days if you never finish a book from that set.
- Face representations of everyone else: held in the reusable photo set and deleted with the set, with your account, or within thirty days if you never finish a book from that set. If you do finish a book, they stay until you delete the set or your account.
- Account records: until you close your account, plus any period we are required to keep records for tax and accounting purposes.
- Improvement records (see below): kept until you close your account or ask us to remove them.
If you would like something deleted sooner, or removed entirely, email us and we will do it.
Log data
Like most services, we collect information that your browser sends whenever you visit — including your IP address, browser type and version, the pages you visit and the time spent on them. We use it to operate and secure the service.
Improving our selection
When you review a book we record the choices you make: which photographs you keep, remove or mark as favourites, and any corrections you make. We use these records to improve how future books are selected.
These records identify photographs by internal reference only. They contain no face data, no images and no child's name. They stay after a book is deleted and are deleted with your account; if you would rather they were removed sooner, tell us and we will delete them. Our team's own quality notes on a book can refer to a photograph's file name; those are deleted with the book or your account.
Children
Children are the subject of the books, not users of the service. LifeChapters is for adults: you must be 18 or over to create an account, and we do not knowingly permit anyone under 13 to create an account or use the service independently.
Photographs of children, and consent to analyse faces in them, come from a parent or legal guardian. We do not market to children and we do not build profiles of them for any purpose other than making the book you asked for.
Child protection
We do not permit content that is unlawful, or that depicts the abuse or exploitation of a child. Where we become aware of such material we will remove it, close the account, and report it to the authorities as the law requires.
Cookies
This website sets no cookies and runs no advertising trackers. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits, which does not use cookies and does not track individual visitors. If that changes we will update this policy first.
The application at app.lifechapters.ai uses cookies that are strictly necessary to keep you signed in.
Phishing
Identity theft and the practice known as phishing are of concern to us. We will never ask you for your password, or for financial information, by email. If you receive a message that appears to be from us asking for either, do not respond — forward it to hello@lifechapters.ai.
Information sharing and disclosure
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We disclose information only to the service providers described below, only to the extent each one needs it, and only so that we can provide the service to you.
Service providers
- Cloud hosting and storage — holds all data, encrypted, in the United States.
- Our printing provider — receives the finished book file and your delivery address, and only if you order a printed copy. It does not receive face data, or any photograph that is not in your book.
- Cloud photo and file services you choose to connect — accessed only for the specific album or folder you select, and only while importing. If you connect Google Photos, we keep that connection until you disconnect it, withdraw consent or delete your account, so that you do not have to sign in again.
- An AI writing service (Anthropic) — writes the short narrative in a finished book. It receives the book’s year, the dates of the photographs, how many there are and general categories such as “outdoor”. It does not receive your child’s name, any photograph or any face data.
- Our payment processor — receives your payment details, which we never see or store.
These providers may only use the information to perform the service we have asked them to perform.
Compliance with law and law enforcement
We may disclose information where we believe in good faith that it is necessary to comply with a law, regulation or valid legal process, to protect the safety of any person, to address fraud or security issues, or to protect our rights.
Business transfers
If we are involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, your information may be transferred. We will give notice before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
Changing or deleting your information
You can, at any time:
- Delete a book and the records made for it. If the book was made from a photo set, that set and its face data stay until you delete the set.
- Delete a photo set and everything derived from it, including its face data.
- Withdraw consent to face analysis, which stops processing and deletes the face data.
- Delete your account and everything in it, from the account menu in the app. We keep only what tax and accounting require for orders you paid for: order number, dates, amounts and country and state. You cannot delete your account while an order is open; contact us and we will help.
- Ask for a copy of your information, or ask us to correct it.
- Ask us to remove your improvement records as well.
For anything you cannot do in the app, email hello@lifechapters.ai and we will act within 30 days.
Security
Information is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is limited to those who need it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we will not claim otherwise. If a breach affects your information we will notify you, and any regulator we are required to notify.
California privacy rights (CCPA/CPRA)
If you are a California resident you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to request a copy, to request deletion, to request correction, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights.
Face data is sensitive personal information under the CPRA. We use it only to provide the service — identifying which photographs contain the child your book is about — and never to infer characteristics about anyone. We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

Agreement and changes
By using LifeChapters you agree to this policy. We may update it, and will post the new effective date at the top. If we make a material change to how face data is handled, we will notify you by email before it takes effect, and obtain your consent again where the law requires it.
